The Hidden Cost of Short-Term Outsourcing

In my experience, short-term outsourcing can look great on a spreadsheet: cheaper contracts, quick savings, happy investors. But each time you take on a new vendor you invest in onboarding, lose relationship capital, add cultural friction, create time zone drag, and often damage local economies. I noticed these downsides before AI—and AI actually makes the case for keeping teams closer to home even stronger.

In large, listed companies, I see employees reduced to line items. An "expensive" role gets benchmarked against a cheaper offshore alternative, and the bigger picture gets lost.

My spreadsheets make short-term outsourcing look cheap only if I ignore hidden costs: months of onboarding, erased trust, time zone latency, and community damage. With AI eroding the old offshoring rationale, the efficient play for me is to keep core teams close, invest in culture, and build durable relationship capital. That is where the long-term game plays out best.
